Today, artificial intelligence is capable of making paintings based on expressionism, portraits, and other artistic pieces such as music, which in many cases cannot be distinguished if they were created by human creativity.
Through algorithms, artificial intelligence can create art through thousands of other images of authentic works.

Paintings made by artificial intelligence
Harsha Gangadharbatla, a professor in the University of Colorado School of Media, Communication, and Information conducted a study that was published in Empirical Studies of the Arts.
The experiment consisted of showing 6 different paintings, of which, 200 people could not distinguish that they were made through a computer. Why? Because the precision is such that, as Gangadharbatla indicates, you can see “even the smallest details such as brushstrokes”.
The French collective Obvious and the Portrait of Edmond de Belamy
In 2018, the auction house Christie’s put on stage the Portrait of Edmond de Belamy, created by the French collective Obvious integrated by Hugo Caselles-Dupré, Pierre Fautrel, and Gauthier Vernier. This work was the first work created by artificial intelligence to break an auction bidding record by selling for $435,500.
One of the creators of the collective, Caselles-Dupré, explains:
“The algorithm is composed of two parts, on the one hand, there is the Generator, on the other the Discriminator. We fed the system with a dataset of 15,000 portraits painted between the fourteenth and twentieth centuries. The Generator creates a new image based on the whole, then the Discriminator tries to detect the difference between a man-made image and one created by the Generator. The goal is to trick the discriminator into thinking the new images are real-life portraits. Then we have a result.”
Obvious signature of this work is a mathematical formula.
Ai-Da: a robot with artificial intelligence that paints self-portraits
Named after Ada Lovelace, a nineteenth-century mathematician and scientist, Aidan Meller owner of the Oxford art gallery give Ai-Da “life” in 2019.
This humanoid is able to transform an image into a drawing with a pencil in hand through algorithm programs. Its creators, in which his partner Lucy Seal must also be named, taught Ai-Da to reproduce his own image just by looking in a mirror.
Another example of paintings created from artificial intelligence is the case of the work of the Renaissance painter Raphael, La Fornarina(1518–1519). Joseph Ayerle in 2018, creates the play the Girl from Trieste using the face of the Italian actress Ornella Muti. This work was made with artificial intelligence and digital photography.
Other art forms created by artificial intelligence
The scope of artificial intelligence is also present in the creation of music. Today, Google has a series of artificial intelligence plugins called Magenta. Here users have access to these plugins, which consist of music made with tools and open source.
The realization of music through AI advances strongly but still needs human creativity to refine details.
And here you can open a debate. Does artificial intelligence surpass human creativity? Although as we saw in some cases, the realization of art through artificial intelligence surprises by its precision, machines are still programmed by humans. Art is a sublime expression of the human condition, is it possible for machines to replace this?
